A team of highly-trained and experienced oral surgeons.
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a recognized specialty of the dental profession which encompasses the surgical and related treatment of diseases, injuries, and deformities involving both the functional and the aesthetic aspects of the head, face, mouth, teeth, gums, jaws and neck.
Each of our doctors is fully trained in oral surgery and has earned the certification of Diplomate by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Our oral surgeons have had up to six additional years of hospital-based surgical and anesthesia training beyond dental school. Each of our doctors is licensed to provide all levels of sedation, including general anesthesia, so you can be sure that at San Antonio Surgical Arts, you are always in the best hands.

Michael Casillas, D.D.S.
A native of San Antonio, Dr. Michael Casillas graduated from Central Catholic High School and attended the University of Texas of San Antonio. Dr. Casillas obtained a Degree in Dentistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School of San Antonio in 1989. He completed related training through externships in oral and maxillofacial surgery and preprosthetic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center of San Antonio. He completed a residency in general practice and a residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Denver General Hospital in Colorado. Dr. Casillas is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Casillas has been associated with San Antonio Surgical Arts since the completion of his residency programs. He is a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Texas Dental Association, the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the San Antonio District Dental Society. In addition, Dr. Casillas serves his community through his active involvement in the Texas Cavaliers.
LaVan R. Parker, III, D.D.S.
Dr. LaVan R. Parker, III, is a native of Austin, Texas, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology at the University of Texas. In 1994, Dr. Parker earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. After completing a General Practice Residency at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital in San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Parker accepted a teaching fellowship in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Baylor College of Dentistry and Baylor University Medical Center. In 1998, he began his postgraduate training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Baylor College of Dentistry and his hospital residency at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Dr. Parker is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Parker has been featured as a presenter at numerous dental and oral surgery conferences and in-service presentations in the Southwest.
Dr. Parker is involved in numerous local, state and national professional associations, including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Baylor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni Association, the American Dental Association, the Texas Dental Association, and the River District Dental Society.
Michael Gissell, Jr.,
​D.D.S., M.D.
Dr. Michael B. Gissell, Jr. was born and raised in the Austin area. He graduated from Texas A&M University, College Station, with a degree in Biomedical Science in 1996. In 2000, he graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas with a Doctorate in Dental Surgery. Dr. Gissell obtained his Medical Doctor Degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock in 2003. Dr. Gissell completed an internship in general surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. In 2006, Dr. Gissell completed a residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas. Dr. Gissell is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Gissell has been associated with San Antonio Surgical Arts since the completion of his residency program. He maintains memberships in numerous professional organizations, including the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Texas Dental Association, San Antonio District Dental Society, American Medical Association, American Dental Association, Baylor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni Association, and the Texas Medical Association. In addition to his involvement in professional societies, Dr. Gissell has been recognized for his participation in various university and dental school organizations.
Mark Haverkorn
​D.D.S., M.D.
Dr. Mark E. Haverkorn was raised in Longview, TX, where his father was an oral surgeon. Dr. Haverkorn attended the University of North Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School in 2003. Dr. Haverkorn then completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the Louisiana State University Health Science Center (LSUHSC) in Shreveport in 2009. Dr. Haverkorn obtained his Medical Doctor Degree at LSUHSC's medical school and completed a general surgery internship while in Shreveport. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
After finishing his training, Dr. Haverkorn entered private practice in the Dallas area while his wife, a urologist, finished a fellowship in Female Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The Drs. Haverkorn moved back to San Antonio. Dr. Mark Haverkorn served as a faculty member at UTHSCSA and served our veterans as the sole oral surgeon at San Antonio's Audie L. Murphy Veterans Hospital before joining San Antonio Surgical Arts. His wife maintains a private urology practice in San Antonio.
Dr. Haverkorn is a member of multiple professional organizations, including the International, American, Southwest, and Texas Associations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American and Texas Dental Associations, the Texas Medical Association, the San Antonio District Dental Society, and the Bexar County Medical Association. Dr. Haverkorn enjoys pediatric surgery and is a member of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association. Dr.  Haverkorn is extensively involved in the San Antonio chapter of the Christian Medical and Dental Association and serves on its advisory board.
